FAQS

Take a look at these septic system FAQs to find out why regular maintenance is so important and to learn some septic system care tips.
Q: Why are my drains backing up when I turn on the water?
A: Your drains may back up when your septic tank needs to be pumped. This could also happen if you're located on a city sewer line that needs to be cleared.
Q: Why is it important to have my septic system pumped every two years?
A: Septic systems consist of the septic tank and a drain field. When you flush paper products and solids, they either float or settle at the bottom of the tank. If they don't break down properly, they could pass through the drain field and cause a blockage. A blockage is noticeable when your yard becomes soggy and stinky, but pumping the system prevents this from happening. This is more than just septic system advice as The Illinois Department of Health requires property owners to perform this maintenance every two years.
Q: Is it a problem that I hear gurgling when I use the water?
A: A gurgling sound could indicate that your septic tank needs to be pumped. Slower-than-usual draining in your sinks, toilets and tubs is also a red flag.
Q: How can I prevent gurgling?
A: Here's an interesting septic system fact: single-ply toilet paper is better for septic systems and prevents backups. To improve the breakdown of paper products and solids, you could use septic tank additives, which we can provide and add for you. Additionally, baby wipes, feminine products and paper towels should never be flushed.
